Joe Martin was born in Harrogate and began playing cornet at the age of 8. He began playing in many ensembles across the area, such as the Knaresborough Silver Band and the Tewit Youth Band.
At 16, under the tuition of legendary cornet player James Shepherd, Joe successfully auditioned for a place in the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. He then went onto successfully audition for a place at the Royal Northern College of Music two years later. Throughout his time at the RNCM, Joe has enjoyed playing in a wide range of ensembles, while working under the tuition of Rhys Owens and Steve Berry. He frequently made appearances with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra, Big Band, Brass Band and Session Orchestra, while enjoying the opportunity outside of college to work with groups such as The Orchestra of Opera North, Those Magic Beans, The Leyland Band and Cory Wong from Vulfpeck.
Joe is a member of the brass quintet, Cobalt Brass, who in 2018 won the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Competition and the Christopher Rowland Chamber Music Prize at the RNCM. He is also part of exciting original projects across Manchester such as Salsa Norte and Skylark Jazz Band.
